In Loving Memory of Katherine J. Mitchell

July 19, 1939 - February 9, 2021

Katherine Juanita Mitchell was born July 19, 1939, in Las Cruses, New Mexico. She was greeted by our Lord February 9, 2021.Katherine, also known as Kat, was the daughter of late Leon Alexander Mitchell Sr. and the late Vessie Blackmon Mitchell. She was the first born of seven children, two brothers: Alexander and Earl, four sisters Joan, Eleanor, Golden, and Roberta (deceased).

Kat attended Centennial High, Community College and Vocational School in Compton and South Los Angeles. She graduated the top of her class (No. 1) and received a certification in Inhalational Therapy. She also spent many years working at the United States Postal Service, and assisted family members with building and operating their private businesses a true entrepreneur.

Kat was raised in a religious Baptist family and accepted Christ at an early age. She was baptized in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and became a member of the Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Compton, CA in 1955 when the family relocated from New Mexico to California. Her mother was a Missionary and Sunday School Teacher. Her father was a Senior Deacon and helped build Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church
which is now named Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Compton, CA.

Katherines love, Orie Winfield, passed several years prior to her homegoing. During their 30+ years together, both experienced wonderful days with their beloved children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a variety of relatives and friends. Kat had three wonderful children prior to her joining with Orie, Lisa Marie Robinson, Ronald Lewis Gaines (deceased) and Andre Anthony Goodwin Sr. Her grandchildren thrilled her
heart Kenneth Louis Williams, Marlana Williams, Andre Anthony Goodwin Jr., Andrea Antwanette Nicole Goodwin, KeAndre Goodwin. She considered her great-grandchildren her lifeline, she felt so very blessed Cheyenne Williams, Alexis Marie Williams, Chyralei Smith, Haile Anthony Goodwin, Drean Jaborie Goodwin, Haylie Marie Starks, Bailey Autumn Unique Burnett. She also loved and cherished everyone in
Ories family. They all loved her as well. Her niece, Valencia Sherise White, cared for her for over 20 years. Kat loved her with all her heart and soul, and constantly expressed her appreciation for her love and support. God sends Angels in different forms.

Although Katherine suffered with a variety of illnesses, she was always filled with joy, loved family gatherings, watched TV daily, loved music especially smooth jazz, old school R&B, and Anita Baker. She also watched sports, read constantly, and knew what was happening in the community and the world, but most of all, she enjoyed giving of herself and helping others. At an early age, she assisted her parents with household requirements and cared for her sisters and brothers because she was the oldest. She was a second mother, cooking, cleaning, doing hair, sending us off to school, disciplining when necessary. She was always around to support us, showing up for school functions, supporting sports (she attended all of Alexanders football games at Centennial High), attending all church functions, etc. Basically, she was Daddy Mitchells sidekick and Mother Mitchell considered her more like a sister (they truly supported each other). Working at a young age, taking care of sisters and brothers, and being raised by Old Lee gave Kat a lot of Mother Wit and good business sense. With this, she helped her family, friends and neighbors. She was also a great singer, sounded just like Etta James.

And she shall be like a tree, planted by the rivers of water, her leaves shall not wither and whatsoever she does shall prosper (Psalm 1:3). Kat was our tree planted by God. She was strong and had a sound foundation because of her belief in God. So please, please do not cry, be happy, because she is now at home and at peace.

We love you Kat and will always miss you.
