In Loving Memory of Ola Mae Dykes

May 25, 1920 - February 1, 2020

Ola Mae Guest was born on May 25, 1920, to Andrew and Winnie Guest in Hugo, Choctaw, Oklahoma. She grew up in Galveston, Texas along with her older sister Genola.  As a girl, Ola Mae also had a special bond with her grandmother, Rosie, who not only ignited her lifelong love for jelly donuts but launched the blueprint for the wonderful grandma that Ola Mae came to be.

It was in Galveston that she met her beloved husband, Robert Lee Dykes, on their high school drill team and the two wed in 1936. Shortly after they birthed their daughter Betty Jean, the family moved to Los Angeles in 1940 where they would spend the rest of their lives and expand their family. They went on to have three more daughters: Chloe Mae, Arlena Delores, and Delilah Marie. Ola Mae and Robert Lee poured unconditional love, curated deeply-rooted values, and instilled the importance of family into their girls; shaping them into the strong women we know and love.

Ola Mae was a figure of her every community, from Crawford Street to 84th, and even 11th Avenue. In her family, she was the face that the generations of children saw when they woke up and when they got out of school. "Grandma's house" was a hub for endless doll play, unforgettable stories, and everyone‚s favorite meals.

"I love you once, I love you twice, I love you next to Jesus Christ." Ola Mae's love for the Lord and her unwavering faith were at the core of her life and became the foundation of her children and grandchildren's belief system. She didn't just speak it, she lived it, embodying Christian values by endlessly giving and forgiving, never judging, and having love for all people.

She was beloved by neighbors, mailmen, and virtually everyone who encountered the pleasure of her presence. Her kindness, thoughtfulness, and consideration for everyone, from loved ones to dogs to strangers, were the cornerstones of her adored persona.

Ola Mae is preceded in death by her husband Robert Lee Dykes, father Andrew Guest, mother Winnie Richard, daughter Betty Jean Hall, and sister Genola Houston Hamilton.

She is loved on earth by her daughters Chloe Bernard, Arlena Dykes, and Delilah Dykes. Her grandchildren Rhonda Hall-Alter, Sharon Pickett, Deborah Hardy-Wade, Bryant Bernard, Dietrah Bodden, Broderick Bernard, and Chelsea Childress. Her great-grandchildren Shana Livingston, Corbin Pickett, Devin Wade, Kaylah Wade, Robert Alter, Andre Bodden, Gabriel Alter, Detriana Bodden, Dolores Bodden, and Bryant Bernard Jr. Great-great grandchildren Layla Livingston, Jayda Livingston, and Kamden Livingston. Sons-in-law Donald Kane and Chris Childress. Grandsons and granddaughter-in-law Michael Pickett, Kevin Wade, Earl Bodden Jr., and Sheila Ford-Bernard. Dogs Ciara, Chance, Kiwi, and Bishop. Ola Mae also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
